Understanding Driver Updates - Why Are They Released?

They are released every few months, or even every few weeks or days, sometimes. You are told this is because they needed improvement, and so the improvements are implemented. But why does it happen? What improvements do they need? Are the developers so short on time, that they fail to deliver great product in the beginning? Well, yes. And no.

Reason One: Haste

It's pretty common for the developers to be in haste, when writing new drivers. You see, the physical product has been manufactured, so now it should start earning money. The sooner it is available in shops, the more money it will make (you know how fast new technologies are invented.) That's why it's much better for the vendor to release a product that's imperfect in the software matter (which can be improved later) than wait and let his opponents get richer. You see, driver quality isn't vendor's chief concern. They can be improved with time and the updates can be delivered pretty easily to the customer. Thus why hardware vendors decide to start selling an imperfect product and then perfect it with time.

Reason Two: New Technologies Are Announced

As I've said before -- new technologies are invented here and there 24/7/365. When the driver is initially released, some technologies might not be presented yet, so the software is not prepared to handle them. But then, customers want those new techs, hence comes the need for new Microsoft driver updates.

Reason Three: Nothing Is Perfect

As the saying says: nothing is perfect. As time passes, new imperfections of code are exposed, and so they need to be fixed. Drivers are crucial factor to your computer's stability and security (and performance, too) and it's very important for hardware companies to have as reliable and customer-friendly image as possible, therefore they constantly work on new ways of patching those holes.

Reason Four: People Love New Versions

It's not a common reason, but the problem exists. Sometimes the companies simply want to release something new, in order to appear as if they cared. Those drivers aren't any serious threat, though. A the same time, they don't introduce any real changes. They are usually harmless and as bug-free as the previous version.

These are the four main reasons why new Microsoft driver updates are released. I believe that now, when you understand all the whys and wherefores, you'll be more sure of what you are doing (and why), when it comes to updating your drivers.
